I will be riding from Phoenix to attend a get-together in Antlers OK, Oct 3-6. I have never been east of Safford AZ before. Here's my tentative plans:
Oct 1: leave Phoenix, take US-60/70 to Lordsburg, NM. Then I-10 to Las Cruces then US-70 to Alamogordo.
Oct 2: Leave Alamogordo, take 82 through Artesia NM, then 529 to Hobbs. Then 180 through Lamesa TX to Anson, then 83 S to Abilene.
Oct 3: Leave Abilene, I-20 to Fort Worth, then TX-121N to US-75N to Atoka OK, then OK-3 E to Antlers.
Oct 4-6: In Antlers
Oct 7: Leave Antlers, take Indian Nation Turnpike N to I-40, then I-40 W through Oklahoma City to Amarillo.
Oct 8: Leave Amarillo, take US-60 W through Clovis NM to Socorro, NM.
Oct 9: Leave Socorro, take US-60 W through Springerville AZ to Show Low AZ, then US-60 back to the Phoenix area.
The longest day is Oct 8, 443 miles from Amarillo to Socorro, so it isn't a real grueling schedule. I'm open to any ideas/suggestions from those more familiar with the TX/OK areas. The only absolute is that I have to arrive in Antlers Oct 3.
If you're looking for a nice day ride out of Antlers while you're there you could head north on 271 and ride the Talimena Drive....maybe over to Queen Wilamena State Park Lodge for a bite and a train ride. Used to ride up there in my Texas days and I think you'll be surprised how scenic that area is if you've never been there. They get some fall colors there but you may be a touch early.
Good news. Amarillo to Socorro is only about 350 miles. You need to gas up in Vaughn because there isn't much service between Vaughn and Socorro. Once you get into New Mexico on US 60w you can run 85 mph with ease. Stay at the Best Western or Holiday Inn Express in Socorro and walk about one block south to some micro brewery with good food. Been through Antlers many times on the way to a lake in Arkansas. Nice town.
Be careful west of Soccoro ( a little town called Pie Town) its been a few years but the county had a money maker going. Your driving along at the posted speed out in the middle of bu funk egypt and all of sudden the speed limit drops. Just so happens about .4 of mile beyond the speed limit sign sat a county mounty. He could tell me exactly where the sign sat. After that I have never taken that route again. I will drop down to Hatch and then up 180 to Show Low.
Just so you know. I-40 from Henryetta, Ok to Amarillo, Tx. is not scenic, flat, very crappy interstate(rough) and is filled with trucks. Not saying that isn't a viable route home, but just to let you know.

Yeah, I figured as much, just like I-40 from Flagstaff to Albuquerque. I decided to bite the bullet that day and eat up some interstate to make some time. This allows me two days to get from Amarillo Back to Phoenix on US-60, a much more leisurely ride. Really, that's the only stretch of my entire route that is all interstate. There's bits and pieces of I-10 and I-20 on my way east, but no more than maybe 120 miles of each. I can live with that.
Suggestion for you New Mexico leg on your way to Antlers..........take US-191 just east of Safford and then AZ-78 into NM and the right on US-180 through Silver City. Left on NM-152 over Emory Pass (lots of twisties) down to Hillsboro, right on NM-27 to Nutt (stop for a cold one) left on NM-26 to Hatch, pick up NM-185 into Las Cruces to Main Street/US-70.
US-70 to Ruidoso, Roswell. The route to Ruidoso and then to Roswell will keep you in the mountains longer.
PM me when you are in Las Cruces and we'll try to meet you.

Actually, I have ridden 191 from Safford to Alpine several times. Thanks for the advice, but I don't have the time to do it this trip.
