Used to live out that way many years ago .... great part of the country! Like you I want/try to avoid interstates as much as possible. I do all the routing for our annual tour and the first thing I look for are hiways and byways with green dots next to them (Scenic Byways) then take into account average daily mileage and available time. I then route "following the green dots".

Good luck with your trip planning, where in Fla do you plan to go? Coast routes are scenic but a bit slow. US Routes 27, 41 and 441 through Fla and Ga. are the "old" hi-ways, before the interstates.

I'd take 301 if you're looking to avoid the interstate. Runs through some small towns, watch your speed through Waldo and a few of the smaller towns. A nice ride, plenty of places to stop and gas up and get a drink. You're coming in july so wear sunblock and stay hydrated.

RoadKingFL said it right. Take US301 south into Ocala. Then switch over to US27. US 27 is only about 6-7 miles east of Winter Haven. That will actually be a nice scenic ride with plenty of areas to stop for food and gas. It does get very hot and lots of sun, so sunblock is recommended. Lots of speed traps at the border of the little towns so make sure and slow down way before you get into town. Ride Safe!
