Thinking about adding Detroit to Mackinaw City to our trip. How are routes 25 and 23 on the east side (traffic, lodging) and route 31 from Mackinaw to Ludington? Also, how is the ferry from Ludington to Manitowoc, WI. Time frame would be within the next 4-6 weeks. At this time, I dont' know if this would be going or coming back from Yellowstone. This is a
(4-6 week) point the front wheel and go trip.
Depending on the weather both routes are a nice, scenic ride.
You may want to book motels early just to make sure you don't have to ride farther inland to find a room
Route 25, goes up and around what we refer to as the "Thumb" and Rt 23 runs up the eastern part of the "Mitten".
Most travelers who get far enough north ususally visit Mackinaw City and then cross the "Mighty Mac" bridge and go into St Ignace for the casino, dinner, lodging, etc.
I think the fare for the bridge is now $ 3.00 but the view (weather permitting) is well worth the cost. (If its a windy day you may not want to cross the bridge).
I think the western part of the "Mitten", Rt 31 (and the Leelanau Peninsula) is more scenic.
As for the ferry, I've never taken it before.
Some folks feel it's too expensive but others appreciate the break in driving and the ship ride. I guess it's a personal decision.
If time is an issue, I'd suggest riding to Mackinaw City or St Ignace then doing the western side tour of the "Mitten".
You may want to consider a stop in Frankenmuth for a chicken dinner or a tour of the "Christmas" store, or a super sized sandwich, bacon breakfast or banana split at Tony's in Birch Run (I-75, exit #136 I believe).
Mackinac Bridge fare is now $4 each way. The new best motorcycle ride, imo, is on H58 between Munising and Grand Marais in the Upper Peninsula. Stop at the Bear Trap 10 miles east of Munising. Cheap rooms in either town. We camped in Grand Marais.
23/25 both nice rides. Gets more scenic on 25 as you go north. Motels are spread between small towns from the thumb to mackinac, so I would plan to make it all the way to mackinac for the night, and reserve a room early as they fill up during summer months.
There are much better route south from Mackinaw to Ludington than 31. Work your way south from Mackinaw to Levering rd. west to M119. Stop at Leggs Inn and have a bite to eat. Continue south on M119 to Harbor Springs where you will pick up US 31 again. Travel 31 south to Travers City and find M22, it will take you around the little finger, south to intersect with US 31 again near Manistee. US 31 will then take you to Ludington. As a side note, travel US 10 East to Baldwin and have some ice cream here, Jones' Homemade Ice Cream Parlor
