Default Indian Reservations,anyone visit one.

On a trip through Utah and northern Arizona and my GF wants to see an Indian reservation. Can you actually visit one and if so could anyone recommend a place to visit?

Monument Valley. It's a Navajo Nation reservation. There's only one hotel (The View) in the reservation so better book it in advance. Also not too far from Grand Canyon to the south west, and Bryce Canyon to the north west.

I don't know how it is now but back in the 90s I had a experience with some dead chickens on a string. It was very costly and I found out reservation police aren't like regular law enforcement----------------------------just be cautious and observe local laws and traditions and value their livestock and pets like they were humans, dead or alive

I've been through most of the reservations in Arizona, and a few others, and I have to say besides the casinos there isn't much there.

My wife is Cherokee and we go to pow wows fairly regularly. We have been to reservations that are extremely poor and we have been to reservations that are middle class (for lack of a better explanation). We have never been told to leave one, Respect the people and respect their property and you will have no problems.

We've biked and driven through Monument Valley several times without a negative incident.
They do have tribal laws and police.
Locals are nice and the wife likes to deal with them on their jewelry, etc.
If you have an opportunity to try the Indian Fry Bread.....do it, it's delicious!

We usually stay in Kayenta, AZ and drive up to Mexican Hat, UT then take pics on the return trip to Kayenta.
(I think the view is nicer coming south).

Just remember that an Indian Reservation is a soverign nation, and abide by their laws. Drive defensively, the roads are poorly maintained compared to the state maintained ones. I ride and hunt on them all over the NW,and have never had a problem.

As mentioned, the roads are not very well maintained (at least in SW USA) on the reservations so you need to be cautious on the bike. SJ Ron
