HOW To Set Up A Long Distant (LD) Group Ride: HELP!
With my thoughts coupled with your posts, I have decided to not ask anyone more than the few I asked to join me.
This 3 wk ride I am putting together is supposed to be fun and not baby sitting or putting up with that is too early or that is too late, or I need this or that......... F'm all! I am back to lone wolfing it. If the few I asked still want to join me under MY conditions, great. If not, "no worries", happy trails.
At least I gave it a try.
As a side note, there is a guy I know who will not ride solo. And is excellent with directions and has more patience than me putting up with those who have different ideas of how a ride should be done. So to him and those of that kind, GREAT! Go for it.
For me, no more.
Again thank you all for your excellent and well thought out responses.

I had a question if anyone has tried this method, or not?
You have a starting and ending location for each day. You have a planned stop (or stops) depending on your prefrences. If people want to join you at your specified times great... if not they can meet you at that days destination later in that day, as long as they are there.
Example a) people hate stopping for pictures, and 2 people love stopping for pictures. So you would have two groups at this point that understand the starting point, and the ending point for that day.
Example b) Some people like morning rides, and some people want to sleep in until 9 so again you have a few different groups.
So essentially if you set up a few groups have a team lead of each group, and each team lead reports to the person heading the whole thing so you know what and where each team is doing the following day, and you cater to everyone at the same time.
Ride Leader (Whatever you decide to do along the way, stop, or don't stop, early or late... the people are with you)
Group A Leader (pictures)
Group B Leader (no pictures)
Group C Leader ( Early Riders)
Group D Leader (late risers)
anyways just sharing an idea that I have seen work for other things... and thought the application of management may cross over to the group ride....

I love it when ppl come up with diff ideas. Sometimes you can "spin off" different ideas and come up with a solution.
If your technique works in a particular group then great. But when you start to factor in one group that likes to stop for lunch and one that does not.
One group that stops to be 100 miles and another group 150 miles.
One group meets to stop and have a smoke. Another does not.
Frequent potty stops. No frequent potty stops.
It is raining, let's ride through it. It is raining let's stop and gear up.
By the time you have finished splitting up into groups everyone is going solo. LOL
But like I said above, if you have a group and he comes down only to one or two things then what you are suggesting would seem to work.

If you offer 2-3 options though, they must pick one. Example If someone likes to stop every so often to smoke, then they should go with the photo group, because they can smoke when they are taking pictures.
If its raining in the morning then and the person doesnt like rain, they can choose the sleeping in group.
They are not stuck to one group the entire trip. Each day people can choose what groups they are in.
ALl you need to worry about is keeping one leader for each group, and you discuss with those leaders... the leaders off each group will then plan times, and spots with their group accordingly. This way you can do whatever you want every day...
Best of both worlds.
