Default GPS synchronization

First time I've tried this, so I have some questions...

I've got a ride plan in the HD trip planner. I've tried to do the GPS synchronization to my Nuvi 40 -- device is recognized and the export is reported as complete.

(EDIT) When I plug the GPS into the computer, I see the imported GPX file on the Nuvi. However, I don't see how to select the stored route, and can't find any info in the manual or help file. I'm sure this is simple, just not obvious(!)

When I transfer to my Zumo 550, upon completion it asks whether I want to import it. This is on the Zumo, I say yes and it imports. Then on the main menu, I select "Where to" and another menu opens where I select "Routes". Then it displays all the routes I've imported. I select the one I want and then select "Go" and it navigates that particular route.

Hope this helps, good luck.

My little cheap Nuvi is much less helpful -- there's no "Routes" menu, no menu at all of imported files that I can find. Thanks anyway!

UPDATE: Found it! The imported route is under Favorites, broken down into listing each intermediate destination on the route as a separate "favorite."

Yup, was going to post that my Nuvi puts them under favorites.

I have the Nuvi 40LM also and run into same problems. You have to know, have written down on a piece of paper, each part of the route. I just gave up and have a paper copy of route in my TBAG map pouch that sits on tank. The Harley Route Trip planner only supports the Harley Zumo GPS..

Did you find that it changed your actual route?

No, it didn't change my routes.

UPDATE: I've since discovered that if you are using a Garmin GPS, the best planning software is Garmin's Base Camp. It's free to download from their website. It takes a little while to learn to use it but it works very well and integrates with any Garmin GPS that supports routes.

I just planned a 14 day ride out to Arizona and Utah. In Base Camp I created a folder by the name of Arizona-Utah and then created a route for each day separately. Worked great. I am now using a Nuvi 3450 instead of the Zumo 550 which I let go with the Goldwing I sold before I bought my Ultra Limited.

Here's a partial screenshot where you can see the entire route. I have selected the 'Day 04 - Tombstone' route and you can see it highlighted on the map. I exported the trip folder to the GPS unit all at once so all 14 days loaded at the same time although they are separate for selection on the appropriate day. So in the morning I will select that day's route and navigate it.

Over the years I have planned many routes (as you can see on my website below) using various software packages and believe the Base Camp/Garmin GPS combo to be the easiest.

If you have questions, let me know. I will try to help.

Low tech, but there won't be any electronic failures. Good idea.
