Just my opinion. Your first route would be better for the time of year you will be traveling. You should expect snow anytime in September when you're traveling in the Colorado Rockies. Plus I76 & I80 will be a boring ride. I would definitely go from Las Cruces to Ruidoso to Amarillo. Then to OK City (nothing exciting) to Talihina, OK. Take the Talimena byway to Mena, AR. Off to Hot Springs then to Harrison on hwy 7. From thre you can hit Branson then 44 to St Louis.

You have some long days in there. After 2 or three days you're not going to be wanting to sit in the saddle for 8 hours a day. If you have the time, take longer and just plan one day at a time.

Try this through AZ. I would recommend staying off the I-17 altogether. People drive too fast, very dangerous road if your not familiar with the road.

Here's another question for you guys. If i wanted to transfer a handgun during this trip, am i pretty much screwed concerning the law? Not sure if there is some special way i would have to stow it riding through state lines.

So far i have maped out the journey, sticking to the lower states for the most part of the trip since i will most likely be leaving in early September. I need some input on my route. Its mostly highway and looks boring. Anyone from these areas Know some better roads or cities that i HAVE to stop in? I am in no rush to make it home and i can extend the trip longer if there are some awesome roads or locations that i gotta check out.

Any tips for this trip? all i plan on bringing is 3 pairs of clothes. a light leather jacket. Two Gatorade bottles of gas. A knife. Small tent.

Bike is a 2012 Superglide. Bought it new last auguest and put 13000 miles on it since then. Tires are brand new metzlers in preparation for this trip. I will be buying a quick clip on windshield for this too.
Depending on the weather, I recommend a trip through Rocky Mountain National Park. The road is above the tree line for a major portion of it and the scenery is breathtaking. Unfortunately it will be too cold for a light jacket. We did this during the second week in August and the temperature was in the low 40's for most of the trip at the high elevation in the park.

If you enter from the South on highway 34 you will exit at a little town called Estes Park. Stop for lunch there. I recommend Hunter's Lodge. Continue east out of Estes Park towards Loveland and you will be on another very scenic section of 34. The elevation on this road is only around 8000 ft so it won't be as cold as it was in the park.

Whatever you decide, good luck, be safe and have fun.

Good weather here during that time of year. Good luck with your ride and enjoy it!
