We stayed at Keystone as it's a good base to get around lot's of places. All the roads are great - Needles and Iron Mountain are not to be missed. In my view Crazy Horse is better than Rushmore.

I'm leaving on the 4th and heading that way, too. Was also up there last 4th of July. I stayed at and am again staying at Steel Wheel Campground in Deadwood. They have a very nice facility and it is kinda centrally located in all the good rides (not that there is a bad one in the area).

camping is great. I recommend the guest ranch at nemo. very centrally located and a very very cool place. also i think crazy horse is a better stop then mt. Rushmore.HINT the view of mt Rushmore is just as good from the parking lot as it is past the gates.
