The wife and I are thinking about riding "The Circle" around Lake Superior. How long would you take and how is the tourist traffic as far as being able to find a motel/hotel? Really don't want to make reservations in case we don't want to ride as far certains days. Thanks in advance for any advise.[sm=feedback.gif]
I'm guessing you're coming from Iowa so how many days do you have? In any case I've done this ride and it's best in late July to mid August. Here's a site with some info: http://www.lakesuperiorcircletour.com/index.html
We have a camper in Chetek WI so will leave from there. Think it is about 100 miles to Superior. I have some info that says it's 1300 miles around. How are the crowds that time of the year?
I rode from Manitoulin Island around the North side of the lake, and then on to Minn, St. Paul, across to Chicago, up to Milwalkee, accross Michigan on the ferry, then accross the Mackinaw bridge and back to Manitoulin. The north side of the big lake and the crossing at Mackinaw are two of the best riding spots I have ever done in my life. Total trip, 4,200 miles in twelve days.
smithk, The wife and I did that last year, started im northern mo. Went to hayward where my brother owns the Lumberjack Steakhouse (and bar). Biker friendly. Went counter clockwise from there. Hotels should be no problem. We kinda putted around, spent 4 days. Nice scenery. The dollar is not what it use to be up north anymore. Keep the camera ready for moose.
1) The Mosquitoes can get as big as the BlueJays.....
2)The Biting Black Flies are even bigger...
Deet......You'll need it if you camp anywhere.
3)Lake Superior never gets warm...Oh, maybe for one week in August you can take a swim in it without cramping up...I'm no longer that brave.
4) Take the appropriate identification to traverse the international borders.

We are leaving from Detroit suburb on 04August07 and planning 5-6 days home to home. Staying in Presque Isle the first night along Lake Huron, then Sault Sainte Marie,ON(Can HOG rally), Marathon, ON; Gran Marais, MN; Copper Harbor, MI; then either home or one more night in *******, MI. Works out to 1935 miles give or take a bit. I have heard that Can Hwy 17 is about flawless from the Soo all the way to Thunder Bay! Recommendations have included "don't pass a gas station without stopping...", "...have lots of film or digital memory available...:. We can't wait. Good luck on your trip!
