Thanks I am thinking about 200 south east down to 93 into Missoula then 12 over to Kooskia
That's a great choice, IMO. US95 south of Sandpoint is nothing special....lots of summer traffic. 200 east into Montana through Thompson Falls along the Clark Fork River and on to Missoula is a fine mc road. Big Horn sheep sometimes wander on to the highway east of Thompson Falls so be careful.
Here' a route we took in early Sept. this year. Go south of Kooskia on #13 to Grangeville.
Head south on #95 through Whitebird, Riggins, to New Meadows. hook up #55 South. About 40 mies south of Cascade watch for & turn east on #24. Cool route to Lowman. continue east on #21 to Stanley. Then south on 75 through Ketchum, Sun Valley, Haily to #20. Takes you through Craters of the Moon. Just past Arco take #33 through Rexburg. Follow #33 through Driggs & Victor into Wy. You go over the Teton Pass & on to Jackson. I doubt if you will be disappointed.

Great suggestion...in my post above when I referred to US95 south of Sandpoint being nothing special I really meant between Sandpoint and Coeur d'Alene. South out of Grangeville as in 2005 Roadking's route is a different story.....and I'll agree that you won't be disappointed with his route.
+2 for 2005Roadking route. We did it this summer pretty much in reverse of what you are planning. 93 south from Missoula, turn onto 75 south and go through Ketchum and Hailey, really nice roads. They take you along the river for a bunch of miles. 20 east to Idaho Falls is pretty brutal, especially after being in the mountains. Flat and hot. We had a nasty cross wind the entire crossing, BUT Craters is a really cool NP that I had never heard of, the wife found it. Oh and we stayed in Whitefish, MT on the western side of Glacier, real good town for some food and beer, drink at the brewery.
