That is very nice congrats. How many day are you coming out for like to catchup with you. I Live in the north central. There is two books you need to pick up the DeLorme Mapping Company Northern Ca. Atlas & Gazetteer & Southern Ca. Atlas & Gazetteer Topographic maps . Back roads. The Sierra's are open from Jun tell Oct on the back roads & pass.
Me and the gf at the time did this ride last year. Flew to vegas, rented bikes and rode through death valley, up to monteray, down the PHC to LA and back to vegas. Best ride I've ever been on. EVER! You'll love it.
we took 15 west to 160 into Pahrump.
Then west on 372 which turns into 178 (badwater road)
then 190 to 395 south to ridgecrest. then 178 by lake Isabella to Bakersfield, then north on 5 to coalinga
198 to 101 north to monteray. then PCH south to LA. back to vegas

Thanks for the route info. We just ordered up a bunch of tourism info from CA. and I plan on getting Freebirdsride1 suggested maps as well. 5 days is not looking long enough, though. Might have to stretch it out just a few more days...
The Wife and I did the Pacific Coast Highway from Ventura to San Francisco... Wow... beautiful... awesome!... Big Sir is a half way point where you would want to spend the night but you have to make reservations well in advance... We ended up riding two hours in the dark because we did not make reservations... On the way back we stayed at the www.fogcatcherinn.com I we enjoyed it and strongly reccomend... On the way up the rider will be wowed by the view... take it slow in and enjoy... On the way back you are always turning into the wall so you will be wowed by the ride... Enjoy! The two most other awesome rides we have done are Bear Tooth Pass n Montana and the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado...
I can't say enough good about this forum. What a resource for all of us. Thank you TimLSheffer for sharing your experiences. Will check out the fog catcher inn. Thank you again.
I once did (in a cage unfortunately) hiway 89 from Tahoe to Shasta and it was awesome, Burney Falls and Lassen Volcanic park are 2 highlights. Mostly 2 lane, winding, hwy in the northern Sierras, I would avoid Winter. It is a great Summer ride and even early Fall.
Just did most of that ride in Aug. For a nice 1400 mile loop this is what I'd do.
Fly into Reno and rent bikes. Pick up 431 south of Reno and go over to the northeast side of Lake Tahoe and follow 89 around the north and west side of the Lake and down to the south. Absolutely beautiful scenery and great riding. At the south end of the Lake hit Rt 50 to make your way over to San Francisco. Do a night or two there and then head over to Pacifica and make your way down PCH. Took us 2 really full days to get to LA. We just enjoyed all the wonderful riding. However, if I were to do it again I would devote some time to Santa Monica pier. Seemed like lots of action. Oh yeah we did do Monterey Pier and thru Carmel.
Important to remember that Rt 1 doesn't necessarily take you along the ocean in some of the cities. An example is Santa Barbara where you might have to exit on Cliff Dr to Shoreline Dr to actually be on the ocean and then circle back up onto 1.
Hit the LA area for a day or so and then ride over to Vegas and then make you way back up to Reno. Google maps says this route is about 1400 miles.
I'm sure that is lots of other great riding that the California people can clue you in on but for someone just looking to "touch" on the riding experience of the area this worked really well for us.
