That's true. Take the 22 all the way to hwy 1a. The intersection is at the town of Cochrane. The 1A out to Canmore is a popular motorbike road. It's a bit more interesting than smoking out the freeway, aka Trans Canada Hwy.

Watch for moose on on the Bighorn Scenic Byway and tar snakes on Chief Joseph. Both are nice rides, neither should scare you away. Just raising awareness.

Too bad hwy 40 probably won't be open, it's a nice ride. Guess you'll just have to come back. I really enjoy the country through Crowsnest Pass, I don't get the opportunity to ride through often enough.

Disregarding the flood damage, hwy 40 is only open from June 15 to Dec 1. They always close it in the winter to respect animal migration.

So assuming they start road work in mid June I doubt they'll have it all complete by mid August when the OP is planning his trip.

You'll have to come back another time.

I'm sure we will be back, I have been to Montana and Idaho several times on fishing trips and always wanted to make a bike trip out that way. From the research I started doing the couple of weeks we will have to ride out there just won't be enough.

On your way through Banff Ntn Park, take the 1A hwy. It parallels the Trans Canada but is more scenic and is a twisty road great for motorbikes. Stop at Johnson's Canyon and take the short hike up the board walk. It will take you about an hour or two...

Once you reach Lake Louise, it's worth a short side trip up to see Moraine Lake and the Valley of the 10 peaks. It's very touristy up there, but what the hell, you're a tourist too. ...

These are a couple suggestions, you can google them to find out where they are exactly.
