Dragon's Tail
The quickest route would be to take either I-10 or I-20 to I-59 and come on up to I-75 and get off at exit 60 (Sweetwater) and ride east on Hwy 68 to Tellico Plains, as others have suggested. If I had never ridden the Dragon before, I would NOT ride it on a weekend. If you ride the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains to Robbinsville, NC, a beautiful ride and better than the Dragon in my opinion, you will be set up to ride the Dragon north. Riding north is safer than the south bound side if no one comes over into your lane. Most people get hurt riding south and running off the road down the side of the mountain.
There are better roads than the dragon in the area and not so crowded and dangerous.
