I am wanting to ride US 550 this summer and I was planning on staying in Durango.
My question is this. There is a road that connects US550 to Rico CO Rt 145. The road is called Hermosa park road. Does anyone know if that is a paved road or not? I cannot tell in Google if it is or not.
Yes it's paved, take the 160W out of Durango to Mancos where you go north on 184 at the main traffic light in Mancos. You will pass lots of lakes near Dolores where you branch off on 145. Now the ride gets fun! The 145 is part of the San Juan Skyway and you will get to Rico (2nd largest elk herd in CO) and cross Lizard Head Pass. I have climbed virtually all of the 14,000 mountains, but I have never (nor will I ever) climbed Lizard Head -- you will see why! Fortunately, it's not a 14k peak.
It's a great drive!
FYI, 550 has been closed for 2 weeks due to continuing slides 2 miles south of Ouray and won't be open anytime soon. This could possibly impact riding this late-Spring and Summer. SJ Ron
If that's the road you are referring to, no it's not paved. Take the route that I suggested or go to Ridgway and loop back around on 62. It's a nice drive! SJ Ron

You really think it could take that long to get it back open? We are riding up via the MDH end of May with intentions of staying in Ouray.
This may change my plans then. I was coming to that area specifically to ride the million dollar highway. Just might have to head for Yellowstone instead!
