So I am flying into Denver Colorado the second week in April...My plan is to rent a car and drive down to Raton NM spend a night and then drive to the Northern Panhandle of Texas...I am going to spend two nights in Wheeler Texas and then have 2.5 days to get back to Colorado. I am traveling with my 13 year old son and am looking for some things to do...routes to take, must see sights...keep in mind we are in a cage...all suggestions are greatly appreciated....BB
While in the Panhandle a trip to Palo Duro Canyon State Park would be something I'd bet you'll like. Good chance you and your son would enjoy that live show, "Texas", kind of a musical drama telling the state's history.
edit: Just noticed you said April...might be too early for that show but still a nice time to see the canyon.
There['s tons of stuff to see and do between your end points, but not a lot of time..
Is your son into bikes? If he is, Madrid, New Mexico is only a couple miles off I-25 between Santa Fe and
Albuquerque. Stop there and let him see where "Wild Hogs" was filmed and the Mineshaft Tavern which was
the inspiration for the biker bar in the movie.
Nearer Raton, a couple hour loop through Capitan to Lincoln will let your son see Smoky Bear's museum and
grave site as well as where Billy the Kid made his famous jail break. Pretty country as well..
Also there's a Space Museum in Alamagordo that's well worth seeing.
If you come down the back way through FT. Stanton, (NOT recommended, boring as all hell), you can also see
Billy the Kid's grave.
Highway of Legends loop just west of Trinidad. It's Co. Hwy 12. Going south on I-25 turn west on Hwy 160 at Walsenburg for about 6-7 miles then turn south on Hwy 12. It's a nice ride (drive) and ends up in Trinidad just north of Raton, NM.
