planning an impromptu few days in lake tahoe this coming weekend. logistics force us to drive there on 4 wheels. thinking of renting a bike at carson city hd. route recommendations for day-rides originating in lake tahoe appreciated (we have a time-share we have to use there so that'll be the start-finish for each ride). my significant other is good for 150-200 miles per day. personally, i like to chew up miles but this trip will be about smelling the roses. or sequoias. or quiet volcanoes, or whatever.
A loop of the lake is a right around 100 miles. Hwy 431 over Mount Rose has road construction going on. It's an awesome stretch but I'm staying away from it for awhile. Spooner pass on Hwy 50 of course is cool, you could make loops with it west down to Placerville, coming back on 88 or 4. Hwy 49 between Placerville and Auburn is exceptional, and the loop of 193 that goes to Georgetown is beautiful. All that area is 1st class riding and lots of cedar trees.
Of course around the lake. 88 to Mormon Immigrant trail to 50 back is easy ride. 4 & 108 are much better but maybe more the your "buddy" wants. Ya could even hit Yosemite down 395 to 120?? Enjoy!
About how long does it take to go around the lake? Gonna be heading to Street Vibrations in September and was thinking of doing that one day.
You can putt for 3 hours or so...stop for some grub, picture stops are everywhere...one of the most beautiful places on earth. Lots of neat little lakeside trails to stretch your legs on too.
If the lake is a clock, I think 12-3 is the most beautiful part (NE) of viewing the lake. 3-6 is nice too, but you tend to have to move quicker with more cars once you're on Hwy 50. South Lake is a pain to ride through and the entire West side is great. I really love the area South of the lake on 88/89, amazing views, good roads and plenty to see and stop for.
thanks to all for the recommendations. we did the lake loop on saturday. lots of traffic, which my g-friend enjoyed as it caused us to stop frequently, which allowed her to take pics. she's an excellent photographer and that's a great area to shoot. we ended up cutting our excursion short so the other rides will have to wait until next trip.
