Day Trip interrupted by O'bummer
When I pulled into Starbucks at Crystal Cove, it looked like every CHP motorcycle cop in the world was there. In addition, there were around ten Orange County Sheriff types all decked out in green battle-style fatigues. They were all drinking Starbucks dry but luckily for me they were all getting ready to leave. Otherwise parking and waiting would have been a bear.
As is usual for California cops, they were all very friendly and nice. I politely asked what the heck was going on, and it turned out that O'bummer was giving a speech somewhere or other. Turned out they were getting ready to do a road block of Pacific Coast Highway further south, so I had to re-route my trip, which was no big deal. All I was doing this morning was trying to get miles on my bike and saddle time, as I am returning to riding after a multi-decade layoff.
Several of the cops were very interested in my XL1200T Sportster. The CHP were riding BMWs, but it turns out that CHP is going back to Harleys in the near future. Makes sense, Jesus our cops should be riding American-made bikes, don't you think? One cop explained that he had a Harley of his own and preferred riding Harleys although he had a very high opinion of the CHP BMWs.
Very cool cops. One of the best things about California is that unless you are a jerk, 99.9% of the cops are good people, very courteous and respectful of citizens' rights. I had my NRA baseball cap on (which I stow in my saddlebag for when I dismount, since the helmet always trashes my hair). This did not seem to put anyone off.
Anyway, a great morning on the T and it was great that I was able to miss the roadblock!

NRA hat would be cool.
