I bought some hard bags for a RK Classic I have.
I just bought a SE RK in the cobalt blue.. I want to get the hard bags painted to match the SE.
I tried to get it thru H.D. they wont sell the cvo paint. Anybody have any easy Ideas or know where to order some.
A friend told me there is a machine that analizes paint and will give a code for it . I live out in the country so ordering it is easier than running to town.
I have 1650 miles on the 07 SE RK no compaints great ride
Good luck. Some of HD's pearl colors are near impossible to get a good match on. I learned my lesson on a set of bags that I bought for my Road King Classic. I took them to a quality shop and gave them a piece from the bike to match the color. They laiddown some slick paint on the bags. However, they were "off". I did not use them and finally scored some new take-offs on eBay. Check out the pic of the bags I had painted. In the pic, they look dead on. They weren't.
On a side note, you can order HD painted stuff and it is usually perfect. I have bought 2 color matched headlight nacelles, a side cover, a saddlebag lid, and both fenders from the MoCo's color shop. They were all perfect.
I heard that red is the hardest paint to match.
I guess I could sell the bags I bought and order some new ones but they sure are expensive from HD. I wonder what colbalt blue with gold leaf would cost???? cha ching
Good luck. I've tried to get parts through HD painted differently than they are listed in the catalog and they said no. If there's not a part number for it in the catalog, then they won't do it. My last issue with them, I was simply trying to order a King Tour Pack in Deep Cobalt without an antenna base on it and they wouldn't even consider it. Said if I wanted it that way, I'd have to order a primered pack for a bike that didn't have a radio and paint it myself.
You experience is odd........The MoCo's catalog has a section in it that brags about their color shop telling you that you can get any HD color whether it is new or old painted on new parts or your old sheet metal........FYI, at on point, they would only paint your old metal parts. They would not do plastic or fiberglass parts like saddlebags, side covers, and fairings. They told me you had to buy new stuff and have them painted.
I have seen a camera type device that is held against the paint that you are trying to match, it is then taken back to the paint supplier and they some how come up with the "recipe" by computer. A good automotive paint supplier should have one.
