Antifreeze dumping
Once in a while the bike purges all the coolant out the tank overflow. I have asked the service department at 3 different dealerships what is happening to cause this. Looks like I'm the only person to ever have this happen. (I call BS)
Has this been a problem for anyone else and is there a fix?
One both occasions this was due to a faulty coolant pump. No codes were thrown but there was a coolant light displayed on the speedo with one of them. The solution for both bikes was a new coolant pump.
Not sure how often once in a while is but with the bikes I've mentioned it was a consistent issue.
If it happens again I'd suggest turning the bike off. Then hold the throttle fully open and turn the ignition back on. (Obviously DO NOT start the bike with the throttle fully open) This turns the fans and the coolant pump on. Remove the plastic cover that is located at the front bottom of the engine behind the front fender that covers the pump and place your hand on the pump. If it is operating then you should feel a vibration as it spins. Turn the ignition off to stop the fans and pump running.
It might be worth doing this check whilst the bike is also behaving normally so you'll have something to comapre to when it's misbehaving. The reason I suggest doing it when it happens again is that if it's intermitent then you'll only get a correct diagnosis while the problem is occuring. The first check if it isn't spinning is to check for power and ground to the pump.
If the pump isn't working what tends to happen is that as the motor gets hot it pushes the excess coolant into the overflow bottle to such a degree that it completely fills and goes out of the overflow hose.
Good luck.
