Default Lifter Failure

Coming home from Rapid City on my 19 CVO Road glide, I heard one hell of a noise 70 miles from home. Pulled to the side a quick as I could. Damage was done. A friend and I are doing the work, bike has 65K on it and the build has 43K on it.

Roller lifter quit rolling, made no noise. So cam wore though the roller, then it spit the needle bearings and pieces of the roller all through the motor.

You can see cam lobe worn down, and metal. Hoping it was contained in cam chest.

This came from in cam chest.

Oil pump jammed together, this is supply side

This is the scavenger side, at this moment we knew everything had to be torn down, not just flushed. You can see were needle bears went though the pump.

Motor ready to go out to have crank trued, pined and welded. All new bearings installed.

Right side case will also be replaced as there is lifter bore damage.

Damn Dave, I think I saw you post this on the CVO site. Good thing you were close to home.

Woods lifters right? You'll be back on the Roadie and it will be built even better!

Keep us posted.

Yes, woods which made it all the more surprising. They are one of the best lifters you can buy.

Thats sucks and it's not very comforting seeing what is supposed to be a top of line lifter in pieces. Had one go bad in a big bore I did last year. The guy went to start it this year and had one that wouldn't pump up. Took it apart and the plunger was stuck on one of them. Bike only had 1500 miles on the build. Fuelmoto sent me a new one right away. So what's the plan for the rebuild beyond the lower end?

Definitely the definition of failure, or "implosion." Keep us updated an when she's back on the road. Great break-down.

Sorry to hear this Dave. It really sucks, and I can say that first hand now. Welcome to the club.

Mine was the exhaust side on the front cylinder. Felt like you just turned the gas off and when I twisted the throttle the knocking came on strong.

I had the SE Stage III with SE lifters running them 15k miles.

Good luck and I look forward to seeing your new build and specs.

Been riding a lot. Rode out to Rapid City with my wife for her Motor Maid Convention, home for two days. Hoped on my other bike, rode to Merimac WI for her Women in the Wind Convention. Home five days, tore motor down. Then rode to CO for off road training and a couple days of high country adventure off road on the Pan America. Then down to New Orleans for AmVet national convention.

Going back the way it was with the exception crank has been trued, and welded and a Cycle Rama heavy duty compensator ramp is going in.
