ORIGINAL: skyhook

The new screamin' eagle catalog has pictures of the new heads, and I think they're a good design. The old style bathtub performance heads worked ok, but the chambers were way too small for a big motor. These new heads(with a little cleanup) are perfect for a 110 or 113. Thanks for the pics, what else have you done to the motor?

nothing else done to motor yet . getting ready for a sert! have open a/c and se exhaust withmodified Exh.baffles. havent run on a dyno yet.

The Springer and Dyna for '08 are advertised as having 105 ft lbs of torque and the RK and UC have 115 ft lbs. These are conservative if they are crankshaft rated seem exggerated for rear wheel torque.... so who really knows without a session on a dynomometer. But I personally would rather go ahead and smash my engine with a sledge hammer rather than allow some cowboy on a dyno destroy it.....

99 hp, 115 tq at the rear wheel. Not too bad for a start!

detonator,

Do mean Harleys that I could ride for a greater time than working on? Never owned one of them... Well, that's a joke with some but very true with a few.

I presently have five that I personally bought (and am paying for). The '08 CVO, an '06 Low Rider (totally stock), '06 Street Bob (cammed up with geardrive with PCIII, pipes and K&N), a 1997 (evo) Softail Custom (modified beyond using very many Harley parts) (great bike!) and a 1956 Duo-Glide that sits a lot gathering dust bleeding into a cookie pan, but still runs fine( used to tear this one down almost every winter for some sort of modification. This is no longer a Pan Head, I changed it to a Shovel Head back some years in an attempt to get more power so the heads and barrels were changed and with a Sifton 4-12 cam - it worked!). Also a BMW R100/7 that is a fun ride too and very reliable. There were other bikes and Harleys too, some of which I could kick myself for selling, like an AMF era Superglide (not a speck of trouble!) and a BMW R69S that I owned years ago. I closed up a marine engine machine shop but kept most of the machinery so I do 90% of my own engine work - I'll still farm out some specialty work to the experts....I build minature internal combustion engines as a hobby, from casting the block and heads to machining the crankshafts, camshafts and etc.

My statement about dynos is not really meant to degrade the use of a dyno, I have always done this sort-of tuning myself using the 'seat of the pants' method. I had the '06 Streetbob dynoed and was alarmed with the way the dyno operator dogged the engine, just got to me. I should have stayed away while he did his dynoing but I watched! He did get a few more horses out of it....nothing 'fell off' the bike while it was being dynoed so it was a success.

The only time I ever watch a bike of mine get dynoed (traveling dyno at Daytona Beach) it raised my blood pressure a bit too. It was a Yamaha V-Max with a redline of about 10,500 if I remember correctly. Well, I found out first hand that the valves will start floating about 13,500. I mean the guy just held it there, valves floating, fuel smoke coming from the pipes...sounding like it was hitting the rev limiter (the V-Max has none.)!!! If I could have gotten to the guy quick enough I'd have smacked him. [:@] The dude appologized and said he didn't know how he let that happen. I wondered if he would have treated his own bike like that. Amazingly, it didn't hurt a thing and I put many thousands of troublefree miles on it after that. That bike made 123 HP with only a jet kit and drilled out stock mufflers. Fun bike.

Running a bike that's broken in up the the rev limiter during a dyno pull does no harm to the engine, if the Dyno and your bike are properly cooled with fans, etc. Seat of the pants tuning is just a good guess, nothing more, but can be as good as some of the tuners out there.

Now floating the valves on a bike without a rev limiter is a different matter entirely!!!
