Default 07 SE Ultra problems

While I love my ride, I am terribly disappointed in the reliablity of the bike.

I purchased the bike in April of 07. Since then I have had issues with:
1. Starter...ended up replacing it.
2. Battery...replaced
3. Heated Grips...replaced
4. Compression Release valve...replaced
5. Blown rear cylinder head gasget..replaced
6. Crossover pipe had crack in it..replaced

Is there anything else I need to prepare myself for that is going to fail??????

Are these issues common with the 07 SE?...

Just venting and needing a little feed back. This is my 4th Harley, over the past 10 yrs. My 01 Heritage had nearly 60,000 miles when I traded it in and I never had it in the shop except for normal oil changes or tire changes.

I guess I really glad I have the extended warranty

Hey Dan,

I'm sorry to hear about the issues with your Ultra. I too have an '07 SE Ultra. It has 10K miles on it that included two 2 - 3K weekend trips and I've only had one issue of a blocked oil galley at the deck that caused some oil consumption/smoking. This, too, as your probs was resolved under warranty.

The biggest issue with these bikes is heat. Lots of it . . . While they meet EPA standards they are very, very lean and the heat generated plays hell on them.

I ditched the factory pipes & breather at 1K miles. I then swapped out the cams at 4K miles and currently swapping out the heads for the SE 110+ heads, some porting and polishing & abillet cam support plate. Dyno tuning (SERT, PCIII, T-Max) to correct the AFR is a must weather you go the route I've chosen or weather you just change pipes & breather.

As to the other issues, I've not experienced those. I'd think that as long as HD / Warranty stands behind them you're good to go.

Mike

My buddy has a 07 Ultra. The rear cylinder had a major melt down and ruined the motor.Had the entire motor replaced at 5000 miles, and his is NOT a SE.No one ever said Harley's are reliable, that's why I bought the longest extended warranty I could get when I bought mine.

If I could do it all over again I would have stayed away from this overpriced machine full of gadgets andwent withwith a stock Ultra for a lot less $$. My 2007 CVOUltramotor has already been replaced under warranty due to a crankshaftrunout issue (http://www.hdtalking.com/archive/index.php/t-2548.html) with under 3500 miles on it, the heated grips crapped out twice, the passing lamp switch went bad, and I know this season will bring more surprises. I spend over 35k for this bike plus I put another 3k into the ecm, exhaust, cams, tuning, etc. WHAT A WASTE !!! I WILL NEVER buy another CVO again.

HD...You fooled me once, shame on you. If you fool me twice, shame on me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In an effort to control the "heat" problems I have removed the lowers. I must say there is a big difference in the amount of air that I now feel on my legs and on the motor. I also had the dealership "download" the heat managment system. This is Harley's way to assist in the heat problem. It shuts fuel off to the rear cylinderin really hot bumper to bumper traffic. Hopefully, this will help proglong the life of the motor.

I'm running D&D Police Interceptor slip ons, PCIII. I do have the extended warranty, so I guess when the engine does go I will have some coverage.

I love the bike...just don't appreciate all the problems I have had. The problems didn't really eat into riding time, as I always had it in the shop when the weather was bad...so I have not lost any good riding time.

THAT MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE TO ME !!! How could that possibly help ? The best way to cool your motor down (next tohaving air flowing)is to richen it up by adding more fuel. If you lean it out (take away fuel) the motor will run hotter thus cause scoring, failed seals, overheating, shutdown, etc. So how does shutting off the fuel to a moving piston cool it down??Plus, couldn't this causedetonation / timing issues with the motor if the rear jug is not firing ?? I am no expert but would be willing to bet that this new idea from the MOCO is partly at fault for so many blown head gaskets on the rear jug's. How could shutting off fuel to a cylinder that is already close to overheating help? Again, I am not a mechanic so any experts out there please feel free to set me straight. It just doesn't make sense !!!

I am glad there is now way my bike will ever have this feature kick in since my ecm is totally different and doesn't incorporate that ridiculous logic. I changed by afr from the factory 14.7 to 13.3 which richens the bike up. I have not had any blown seals and will keep this forum updated if I have one this season.

i just got rid of mine with 4500 miles on it...the only problems i had were the heated seats didnt work (but i live in fla, so it didnt matter) and like you the rear head gasket sprung a leak. it was the only bike i owned that i got rid of with under 15000 miles on it. i did like the bike, just wasnt what i thought it would be.
