What are you experiencing for oil consumption in 1000 mile intervals?
I have a 2008 FXDSE 110" with 840 miles. I have used 1 1/2 quarts so far.
I was told by HD that it is because it is breaking in. They also said it is normal to use
a quart every 1000 miles. This seems rediculous!!!
1.5 quarts in the break-in period!!!! WRONG! If your HD dealet told you that, then he just can't see the light and there is only one place where his head can be and where there ain't no light...Just my humble opinion. FXDSE2
I don't use any on my 2005 Se Fat Boy with the 103" engine.
Have you checked your air filter element to see if any oil is being sucked though it? This is a good indication that you are putting too much oil in the oil tank. You might try keeping the oil level about midway, between full and add, on the dipstick. It wont hurt anything and you might find out it doesn't use oil at that level.
Good luck,
Tom
I din't have any consumption issues during break-in. Since then I have been consuming oil at about similar rate as yours. Took it in for 8K check-up and complained about the amount of oil consumption. Turns out that I had a leak in the rear jugs, had to get the gasket recall change work at this time. I wasn't intending to do the gasket change as I thought I didn't have any leak issues.
Moral of the story, check for leaks around your front and rear jugs.
My 08 UCSE3 uses less than a 1/2 qt every 5K. Has not had the recall engine head work done yet. Have 12,000 miles on the bike. Just starting to show "wet" around the rear cylinder.
As a starting point, oil should be only half way up dip stick when cold. Bike will blow off excess oil through the breather if over filled when hot.
It takes a lot of riding to get the oil up to temp, (230+ degrees) and a lot of folks think the bike is hot and add oil when checking. I have used the "1/2 way up the dipstick" method for many bikes over the years and have never had a problem. You are better off being a half qt low than over filling.
If you get a reading half way up the stick when cold, where would it read when up to temp?
Do you use synthetic oil?
I am concerned that I have a problem with this bike. Harley tells me that using 1qt per 1000 miles is normal. I don't agree. Worse than that, I have used 1 1/2 in just over 850 miles.
