How hot is too hot

I have a new 2012 CVO Softail. I have installed VLIEDs to richen up the bike and bring the engine heat down. In St. Louis I am still running about 250 degrees measured using an analog dipstick. I am concerned about the long-term impact this high operating temperature will have on the reliability of the engine, not to mention my fertility.

Has anyone installed an oil cooler or have any knowledge of at what temp I should really start to worry?

Anything under 290 on the new bikes is uncomfortable but acceptable, that's why most run a 20W50 motorcycle synthetic oil and a fuel management system.
