How does everyone feel about the SYN3 that came in their CVO. Did your breakin go as planned. rings seated ok, and no or low oil usage after breakin ? The reason I'm asking because I'm a little leary of using synthetic for breaking in a motor. I would really hate to dump a new filter and oil, if snythetic is ok for breakin.
Thanks in advance. Jonnierock
lets see, the factory puts it in, and has to warr their motors? mercedes benz does the same, so does porsche, and even corvette, bmw and other engine manufacturers. they all have long powertrain warranties and none of them have any "break in issues" synthetic oil does not have those issues, thats urban legend,I have been putting synthetic oil in my harley engine builds for years without any issues whatsoever

Agreed...I always wonder why people keep beating this one to death.
makes no difference what you put in it syn or standard oils it will break in just fine.
nothing but a big mind game worrying about break. Just ride it.
Or do the 30-60-30 or was that the 30-60-90. who knows they come up with some new magic breakin every few years.
The only reason guys will use conventional over synthetic is cost due to the first few oil changes being so close together.
When I had my 106 done the mech suggested changing the oil at 100 miles and 300 miles.
He said it's so he could see if there are any obvious issues such as big chunks of metal etc and it helps clean out the small metal pieces the motor sheds during break in.
Synthetic oil is not more slippery than conventional oil. Synthetic oil is just crude broken down to it's most basic parts with the all the impurities removed then mixed back together. That's why it resists high heat and last longer,no impurities,it's pure
Ok the Harley syn3 is a blend not 100% synthetic.
It will break-in just fine with stock oil.
The big thing is heat. As it heats up metal changes shape, the rings ware to the cylinder wall and the wall changes shape with heat, bearings ware a running track on their mating component and so on.
Vary the rpm, load (both torque and horse power) during the break in ride. Remember heat is the big concerns so dont do it in traffic. Forward motion creates air flow, air flow reduces heat.
I choose to dump the break in oil at 100 to 200 miles. Then I ride it like I stole it. The compression slow down pushes the rings to the cylinder walls so just back off the throttle and let is slow down. The carbon build up in the ring gaps and other places is part of the break-in. I have several bikes with tens of thousands on them with no problems.
I run Amsoil after the first change although there are several very good manufactures out there.
I try to dump mine every 3000 miles. At this interval the oil has now time to break down or gather any significant amount of contaminates. I use a scavenger to clean all the waste oil each change.
Have fun dont stress and ride!
My question is this, and I hope someone can answer it. Why does the CVO's come with SYN3 in the cases, but the other bikes do not? Harley even recommends NOT using synthetic oil for the first oil change at the 1,000 mile service and then waiting until the bike has gone 4,000 miles before you put synthetic oil in the engine.

The Harley SYN3 is not 100% synthetic oil and will allow the engine to break-in just fine.
I believe they dont put in the other bikes as an added value in ones mind when purchasing a Screamin Eagle.
They dont recommend changing to 100% synthetic until the break-in is complete.
SYN3 is full synthetic. synthetic for all 3 holes is where the name SYN3 comes from. harley did offer a blended synthetic some time back.
Well this is what Harley posts on their MSDS sheet publish by federal law that SYN3 is 60/40 blend.
Of course this is posted by a competitor however the MSDS sheet is not controlled by the competitor. http://easyrider.easyrider.com/syn3.htm
