Default Changing Fork Seals

I changed the fork oil on my 73 FLH. Went to 20wt oil as I was getting fork dive enough to dent the top of the front fender. Put 6.5 oz. of oil in each fork. I'm getting a little oil seeping out from under the rear of the cowbell on the right fork. So I guess I'll be changing the fork seals this weekend.

My service manual isn't real clear on how to do this. I did it on a 2009 Street Glide, but ended up with one of the seals leaking. First, I'm not even sure the bike has a 73 front end. The caps are supposed to be vented, from what I can tell, but these aren't. Anyway, I'll order the seal kit for the 73. Anything tricky that I should be looking for when doing this job? Should I change the springs while I am in there or just leave them alone?

Thanks.

It's simple enough to change. Jack up the front of the bike. Remove wheel and fender. The 49 to 77 front end has a 1/2 lock nut on the bottom. Remove the nut and pull straight down on the slider. The seal is held in by a snap ring. Remove the steel washer, felt washer and oil seal. Replace with new parts. Note the damper tube has flats on the bottom. Line these up with the slot in the bottom of the slider. There is a lower bushing and gasket that may remain in the slider or may stay attached to the dampner tube.
