Still hard to justify the price at 3X the cost of the S&S case / 5-speed option mentioned above. Of course, getting a used 5-speed is a bit of a crap shoot.

I have tried cheaper options for both the trans and the primary and on both occasions I head to spend a lot more money and time to make it work. I did go to a baker primary and yes it is more expensive than most but I do know that I will never spend another penny on it. The quality and Durability will speak for itself.
As for the tranny, I don't have the OD6 w/N1 shift drum yet But will within the next year. I'm currently running the Ultima 6 speed and already had to replace the pawl spring and I think I was quite lucky not to have more damage picking up the broken spring into the gear set... I like to power shift my massive little 80"er but cannot because of the Ultima. It just doesn't handle it.
So one can spend a lot now or scrimp and spend a lot more over time with the added aggravation.....
I have a 79 shovel FLH which I want to keep as standard as poss. Can someone please tell me what engine upgrades will fit in my frame? I will change the parts myself, so I don't want to buy a ready made engine. So what size can I go to with different barrels pistons and heads and still put it back in the bike with the standard tank and frame in place?
Then how about a 5 speed box? In the UK we have a 30mph speed limit in built up areas, and 30mph sits right between 2 gears on the 4 speed. It really couldn't be in a worse position. Wondered if 5 gears would help?
Thanks in advance
Just begs the question....if you want to keep it as "standard as possible", then why all the mods? And please understand, no disrespect intended.
I just had my shovelhead motor in my 1979 ,upgraded to a 93in. stroker motor with duel spark plugs per cylinder, Dynatek electronic duel coil ignition and a new S&S super E carb and boy was that the perfect upgrade!! I can"t begin to describe the power compared to the tired motor it had. I have 235 miles on the rebuild and it gets stronger each time I ride her,,,,

You obviously got stuck in 6th grade at 18 so they graduated you out of sympathy.
Looks like you got your panties bunched on the Shovel forum and you are disrespecting it here thinking you will get a free pass. There are good and bad on all forums. You ride long enough, you will see that.
Me and Jethro bodine graduated the sixth grade together, best 21st birthday present ever, been riding a long time Louie and unlike most it's 24 7 for me, just made a comment that most of the dopes on svlhd us comment on stuff they know nothing about I can tell your one of them 4000 post Internet bikers, you ride long enough you won't have time to post 4000 times, now I gotta go get my panties unbunched.
Panz. As someone once said "never get into an intellectual argument with an unarmed man." Any regular reader of this forum knows that you know of what you speak.
Pat H on the other hand is one of those guys you run into who will tell you they've been doing (fill in the blank) for 30 years and they still don't know what the hell they're doing.
