Welcome Kent, that shop manual can teach you a lot, but will not make you an instant wrench, talk to shovel riders when you can, try to get specialty tools for the work you plan, know your limitations, use the internet read forums, did make the same mistakes as others.

I recommend going to Donny Petersen's Heavy Duty Cycles web site http://www.heavydutycycles.com. Use the search function to look up Shovelhead and there are a number of articles on all facets of those bikes.

ask me anything you want to know.......... I am a shovel rider and a professional harley mechanic at a non harley dealer...... (so we actually work on a ton of bikes over 10 years old, unlike HD)
