I just acquired a 1980 FXWG shovel. It seems to have been pretty well looked after, but has been sitting in someone's garage for 12 years.
I'm not sure what the carb is - could someone have a look at the photos below who knows these things? I want to buy a rebuild kit for it so I can take it apart, clean and rebuild it.
Would I be correct in saying it's a Mikuni TM40-6 Flatslide carb with accelerator pump - or a Mikuni HS40 - or are they the same thing?
I can't see any identifying numbers on it - apart from what maybe says "TO 85" and "T40 SS" in one of the pics below. Sorry about the crappy photo but it's difficult to gat a camera in there!
Also - for those that know these things, is this a decent carb for it - or should I look for something else?
Try it and see if it's dialed in first they were a good carb once it was. Stock up to 93" the S&S E is plenty of carb for a shovel, G's too big. If you do run the Mik. make sure the carb/ intake manifold has the support bracket and the air cleaner is supported also. Air leaks in short order if you don't.
I'm going to try and get a rebuild kits for it, give it a really good clean and see where we go from there. But if I'm not happy will probably switch to an S&S.
I'm thinking about increasing the displacement of this motor in the future though - so will probably hold off on changing the carb until I make a final decision about that.
