Default Hydraulic Lifter setup preference.

Buttoned up my engine last night but I still have to set the hydraulic lifters. I understand the procedure but I was curious about the additional turns in on the rods.

The manual says to bottom out the rod, then turn back 1-1/2 turns.

Others say that you should seat the rod on the lifter, then turn down 2.5-3.5 turns.

Same difference? My bikes been on the stand for weeks so I don't think I have to wait for my lifters to leak down, but for future reference, at what point to you wait? After turning in the push rods or before?

I seat mine and then turn down (lenghten). Biggest thing to remeber is do not move to the next on until the pushrod moves freely.

How about some info on the bike? How long ya had it? FLH? What year? Any pics of it overall?

Default Thanks

Cool thanks, I sorted it out last night and set everything up. I'm just waiting for a 9/16 torque wrench extender so I can properly torque down the head now and after a heat cycle, I'm taking care of some horrific electrical patchwork. I'm pretty close to firing it up, this thing has sat for 10+ years. Previous owner never got it running right after a "top end" job. I pulled it apart and the rings were upside down and in the wrong positions. New rings, some quick measuring and a nice hone and we are good to go. Can't wait to fire it up.

Some pics are in my album, I'll add some more work done. She's a 1978 1/2 FXS Lowrider. My first big twin, I have a 94 sportster chopper, but this one is staying stock, I'm actually pulling off lots of the after market stuff like the wide glide trees and trying to get it back to the way it came.

Looks like a great project there. One of the best things I have used for torquing heads is a claw foot socket.

I am alway s amazed at people's patchwork electrfical "fixes". Recently finished a complete rewire on a buddy's 75 FLH that had a patchwork of fixes done to it. After taking it all off and looking I was surprised it hadn't melted down.
