they mix the color to what they think is the correct color - for a street user bike and not a judged piece your good to go as its almost correct - but everything in the antique end was air dried single stage hand rubbed to a satin finish
its cookie cutter paint for the most part = house of color stuff
john pierce colorrite ) has the original formulas for the antique colors but its 300 qt for paint and 300 a pint for silvers we just did a 65 FL in Hi Fi blue and birch white the paint alone to do the machine was 1200.00 dollars

He doesn't have any magical original formulas... It's just Dupont Chromabase paint that he sells, nothing special. Any good painter can color match from an original sample. That's all he did.
I've gotten paint from him before. You are simply paying a premium for the color/shade if you don't have anything to match off of.
We have sent stuff to the PPG lab to get matched, and that paint was less than what Pierce sells his for. He provides a good service for those that don't have other resources though.
in a judging atmosphere at an AMCA event he has managed to be the go to for almost everything but indian - and i have access to cameras IF i have a sample, most times you dont have a usable one on a 60 - 70 year old machine

K...but where do you/would you find an original sample of 1949 burgundy paint that was still in good shape after almost 70 years?
Edit: John you beat me the point.

I had my paint matched at a local place when I did the car. Used the inside of the trunk lid, placer gold came out perfect. You need a flat spot with At least 8 inches across. Unless the tank is good, where would they match it off of? For the bike I just go to the paint store, pick a color, and have them add enough flake(in my color choice) to blind most people.
Old colors are tough too because of the lack of lead. Really helped the deepness of some of those colors and sometimes the paint you get that should match, won't.
