I had my paint matched at a local place when I did the car. Used the inside of the trunk lid, placer gold came out perfect. You need a flat spot with At least 8 inches across. Unless the tank is good, where would they match it off of? For the bike I just go to the paint store, pick a color, and have them add enough flake(in my color choice) to blind most people.
Old colors are tough too because of the lack of lead. Really helped the deepness of some of those colors and sometimes the paint you get that should match, won't.
the inside of the fuel tanks were not covered with enough color to be usable - if it is its not OEM - an area under a fender emblem with todays equipment can and i have done that on harleys - no sunlight on the tips that is if it came with them ( fender tip ) in the first place not all did
original indains the tool box was painted in and out with the original depth of color and has not been affected buy sun light - untill 1948 contrary to what you see indain had 3 colors -- indian red - black and dark blue - you could ( order a special color ) but it took forever
