Default Transmission Rebuild Kit?

Hello everyone, I currently have a 1979 Lowrider with a 4 speed transmission in need of a rebuild.

I had a reputable mechanic get the bike up and running after sitting for over a decade. If the odometer and the scarce records I have of the bike are correct, bike has a hair over 53k on the clock.

The bike now has another neutral between 3rd and 4th gear, metal-on-metal noises while in neutral (both of them ), very notchy shifting, and it popped out of 2nd gear on me twice in the 25 miles I've ridden it so far.

If you know of a reputable rebuild kit I would love to hear it. I will likely be attempting this with the assistance of some of my father's friends that have been tinkering with Harleys for 3 decades.

Something like this? https://www.2wheel.com/jims-4-speed-...o4EaAsy28P8HAQ

Thanks in advance!

they usually leak like crazy when they need a re build as the bushing in hi gear wipes out

special tools will be needed = along with the factory shop books parts and service

to me your issue is shift fork alignment / and or the lever linkage is wiped out as well

It may be just a bent shift fork.

It is leaking oil at an alarming rate right now...

I'll have to double check to see if my family friends have the tools required, I didn't think that would be an issue!

He's right. Find a REPUTABLE mechanic who specializes in older Harleys. Do your research cause there aren't many left anymore. Personally I'd send it to Ricky Noot: http://rickynoot.blogspot.com

Default Went with new Rev tech trans

My 4 speed was making noise and leaking some priced rebuild and compared with new. Went with the 5 spd. In a 4 spd case slight mods needed mostly from having a 51 frame with shovel stuffed in it this a snug fit. But any way much happier with new better on freeway Good luck. Ride Safe. Wild Bill

But any way much happier with new better on freeway <<<<< how is that when the 4 into the 5 all you do is shift another time before you get into Hi gear that is the same 1 to 1 ratio

the only over drive available is from baker and its a 6 speed with a .086 hi gear not 1 to 1 - engine speed is exactly the same in hi gear 4 or 5 speed even with a evo trans
