78 FXE 4 speed clutch help
Picked up this Shovel about a month ago . Looked good , motor sounds good 135psi both cylinders but clunks into 1st and the clutch drags . Read dozens of post and decided to pull primary and maybe do the long bearing and adjustable retaining plate mod . Guy told me it was converted to belt primary. When the cover was loose this black oily sludge weeps out . Once the covers off everything is covered in this like thin axle grease . The clutch springs are blue and look new . The clutch plates are the anti-rattle style . Finally my question . Shouldn't this all be dry in there . Or might the oil/grease be coming from somewhere else ? Trying to form a plan of attack . What say you " O great shovel wizards " ?

Most likely culprit for the gunk is the little seal in hub nut or the motor seal leaking. Skip the long bearings I've had issues with those in a few bikes. Do a ramjet retainer , the cheap one and an aluminum pressure plate and you'll fix 95% of a shovels clutch problems if the plates aren't warped.
