Went for a good ride and park my 93 fatboy in the garage and came back after awhile and a big oil spot under the bike......thought it was the primary leaking but took a flash light and flollowed it up behind the primary case and in front of the belt sprocket. Took a drop and smelled of it and it was tranny fluid......I do most of the work on my bike and wanting to know what I am in for......I have ordered a clutch spring compression toolas I have the stock clutch. Going to rebuild the clutch with Barnetts clutch pack.......So I am assuming I need a seal and a few other things.......but how major of a job am I looking at or extra tools that will be in order?
what did you need the compressor for?? cant one pull the clutch apart without one?? or is it a crazy mouse trap, my polaris clutches on my atv where pretty long and stiff but it wasnt bad to take it apart. just wonderin cuz im gettin ready to put in a belt drive dry clutch and was hopin to jsut impact the two nuts of and pull the stock setup out. the video they have makes it look that simple anyway. but im also not plannin to take the clutch apart just off.
I think 93 thru 97 EVO's, you have to have a special tool to compress the springs of the clutch to remove a retainer ring. But I still have to take the clutch off to get to the trans oil seal.......looking at the manuel and seems to be straight forward. Just want to know if someone else has done the job, to let me know some tricks that might make it easier.....
Well, to give you guys an update on my transmiison seal. Got every off and ready to take the main drive nut off and I reach in to see if there was play around the nut and to my surprise the nut was loose and I took it off with my bare hands. Bingo. that was the problem....the nut back off and just happen it started leaking in my garage and not out on the road some where......just prue luck. And yes there was tell tell signs that it had been leaking for awhile but finally it was on it's last leg when I went for a good ride.......So in the mean time I am sending my inner primary and having West Coast chrome plate it for me as I want a chrome inner primary but I am not going thru this again just to replace the primary and too, less problems of leakage knowing my primary doesn't leak. Now I can put the regular main drive nut back on but I see Jims got one that has the locking plate welded to the nut and there are predrilled holes that once you have it tighten down, one of the holes will line up with the locking holes. Then may not have to tear it apart for a long time.........I know I have read that some guys here have had at least 3 seals replaced so I am keeping my fingures crossed. Now My belt looks good and has 35000 miles on it . Question.......would it be advisible to replace it? how long do they last. I am old school so this is my first belt drive.......
That is a toss up. That belt should last double that life easy if kepy adjusted correctly. Then again there is the thought process of "well I am already in here and have this thing apart and have to install/adjust the belt anyway". I usually opt for the new part and save myself the future hassle. Coin toss time.
