Sooooo....put new seals on the mainshaft and per Keenan Tatro's advice (whiz mechanic) installed a 77-79 spacer(35070-77) which does not use the key. When tightened properly, the spacer will turn without the key and the key just causes oil leaks so HD got rid of it.
The 77 spacer measures .030 thicker than the one it replaced(35171-37). So when I torqued the mainshaft sprocket nut down, the sprocket got super tight. You should be able to turn a sprocket with one finger. I have to grab the sprocket with my whole hand to turn it. Trans is in neutral, yep.
Gonna pull that nice, new James seal that's in there and try the old spacer and see how tight that gets when I torque it down.
Any thoughts on this?
BTW, just want to thank the usual suspects and all the others who make this forum so ***-kickin'! I would have killed for something like this when I built my first scooter way, way, way back in the 70's.
seen this more then once - give the gear a rap with a brass hammer can sometimes that re sets the end play washer behind the hi gear - gear
what happens as you remove all the stuff seals, gears, spacers - the inside adjustable washer spacer, sets the end play in and out - it will catch the side of the gear and cause it to jam, making the works stiff to turn, leaving it as is will make the nut loose when it re sets its self - you will get it
Ok, I asked Tatro about this and he was kind enough to get back to me. For all of us who dont have the kind of knowledge Johnjzjz, Twizted and some of the others, you may want to check out some of Tatro's vids on YouTube. They are good.
But, I think jonhjzjzj is correct on this one. Tatro suggested the cork gasket may have gotten buggered upon installation of the seal. The cork is supposed to sit around the spacer, not under it. And that is correct. But looking at Tatro's video, shovelhead stroker rebuild #122, his spacer is sticking out past the seal further than mine. So that would suggest to me that the cork is fine.
When you told me to beat on the sprocket, I'm hitting the face of the sprocket and pounding toward the case, correct?
undo the nut for the sprocket and your just trying to re seat the back washer
we have not used a single lip seal with the cork in 20 years - I use the metal back double lip seal and for go anything else - lasts longer not flimsy like the open back seal to install and if the single comes in a kit, I throw it away with the cork and use the double lip seal we keep in stock
Follow-up: After dismantling everything, I found the sprocket nut had loosened significantly--I was able to turn in back and forth with my hand. As long as i had everything apart I installed one of Ray's mainshaft spacers, new seal, and super nut. Hopefully this should cure things for awhile.
Once again, thank you all for the input.
