be careful on who you select - nothing wrong with top dollar from a true performance shop that comes with referrals from pros - but keep this in mind - I specialize in fixin what other guys break and eff up - the "other guys" are often small shops that do work for just a little less than full-on pros - I dont want you sending me your 4-speed - when you talk to the shop - you'll know the difference between a poser and a pro - ever talk to the guys at T&O - if you have - you'll know what I mean - Ferg
a 4 speed is a very simple gear box originally introduced in 1936 all but some minor changes its still in use in new machines in 1985/86 FXWGs
do the build on line in this forum lots and lots of experience on this site as many of the guys have done them over and over and over adding to 100,000s of miles
why pay a specialty shop when its not anything special
Yes, I am familiar with everything that comprises a thorough rebuild.
I would much rather do it myself because then I would KNOW it was done correctly with no "just getting by" passovers.
However, for example, I do not have a press with all the proper fittings with which to press the needed races and bushings. That main drive gear race is important. I need mine replaced and then properly line lapped via the opposite main shaft bearing to insure a good fit for the output seal. Things like that.
I could take it out to a machine shop but I am not sure they have the best fittings and tools to do this either.
