Default Need Advice Please

Too much damage? I just don’t know.

Oil seal look backwards?

Knick

Knicks

There is the leak

Same knick
Good morning! I have a 1980 FXE 1200. Leaking oil from Main shaft seal of motor (the one located in the middle of the stator). Had to FIGHT to get the “alternator rotor” aka stator cover off. In the process I may have “knicked” one of the magnets on the inside of the rotor/cover AND knicked one of the coils on the stator. I need advice on weather they are too damaged in which case I would need to replace the magnets and stator OR I am good to go to ignore it and reuse them. And on a side note I noticed the person who installed the seal installed it BACKWARDS!! Or so it seems.... must be why it’s leaking. Any advice on how to get that out would be appreciated as wells Thanks in advance! Pictures posted below.

Oil seal is Not leaking... Leave it be... Gonna get alot of Internet Opinion on the Orientation of the Seal.. Long as yer staying pretty much stock... leave it alone!!!
Rotor?? That chip does Not concern me.. long as the Magnets are Secure.. and I mean Will Not Budge one tiny bit!!
Now, The Stator? I would Not reassemble with that one... Inexpensive to get the Correct one... and Do Not go Chiwanese, unless you enjoy disassembly!!
A good Quality Stator [I prefer O.E. if I can get 'em... Even Used] and Get on with it..

BTW if you call that tiny smear on the inside of the Rotor a leak... You need a Different Brand!!!

I replaced that seal on mine a couple of years ago and I can't for the life of me remember if it went in backwards or not. I "think" it is in there correctly but you need to consult the factory service manual about it. I would replace that stator while you are there. If you can't get OEM, Cycle Electric makes them (USA TOO) and I've read they were well regarded.
Your leak might be from that big *** O ring that's between the inner primary and the crankcase. Don't forget to take a good look at your inner primary bearing before you start buttoning it up. And if there are any burrs around your knicks, polish them out with fine sandpaper. There is a correct sequence to tighten down the inner primary to the crankcase and transmission, it's all explained in the manual.

That Stator is Toast, the Gouges in the winding now have a High Resistance in the circuit and will not create the proper Voltages required..... Replace

Ok thanks gents! The Harley dealership said they can have one for me tomorrow. And as long as that magnet is tightly in there (which I believe it is) I’ll go with re using that rotor. . I can reuse the regulator and assume it’s just a plug and go scenario? Thanks in advance!

On a side note... Idk where else that leak would be coming from for I have a dry clutch set up. (Should of included that in the beginning)

I actually had A "Cycle Electric" in my Evo that had the same nicks in the stator and it still put out 14.1v. However I did replace it with a new one, once it's open and grabs your attention you have to replace it or it wallet at you.... It's still in my tool box for a back up....... USA made and the best out there for Shovels and Evo's... Looks like the 32 amp setup... Is it?
