Default Trans question

I have a 78 flh with a leaky transmission. I have a second transmission from an earlier bike (72 I believe). My 78 does not have the L key on the main shaft spacer but the earlier one does. Are these two spacers interchangeable? Which style is preferred?

the late is a caged hi gear bearing and the spacer is for that app - the 72 is a loose roller bearing and the spacer is for that = now the cut out is a throw back to the days before they had a seal in hi gear and the clip can be omitted but they don't interchange the two units

but you can swap out the complete unit one for the other

I have another question about the transmission. I was looking at the early 78 parts manual and noticed the cork seal behind the mainsheet spacer is listed as 41 to early 77. Does that mean the 78 should not have a cork seal between the case and spacer?

2 seals were used through the years

original early seal with the cork backing, is a single lip type and the rear of the seal is open for the cork to have a location, so it does not become flattened when installed with the seal - but the later that is double lip style seal, the back of the seal is closed leaving no room for the cork

the seal spacer still has in some transition years, the small clip for the spacer / hi gear cog against the drive gear - leave it out as well using the double lip type as well as the cork - and yes the double is a better seal design -- but hi gear bushing and OR the mainshaft area under the bushing is suspect in any leak - original bushing material is tougher then the steel on the shaft and over time the shaft wears away - this leaves you with never being able to install a standard size bushing as its too loose at the beginning of its install

its 50/50 to re use the mainshaft and or hi gear its self - everything is today --- the newest 4 speed it over 30 years ago - but sometimes you can just re bush the hi gear and re use everything else - never happens with a bike I own or when I don't have the parts in stock

I've been using the cork behind the spacer in my transmission. is it possible that could cause the trans to leak?

the cork is a pancake when you remove - it and the thickness of a double cant catch the out side lip of the second part of the seal correctly - but still think you have wear issues but then again always a hope it works going on with a shovel

I'm not sure I follow. What do you mean by the second part of the seal?

The issue I've been having is the oil leaks with the bike on the stand constantly. its not a fast leak, but it doesn't stop until the oil level gets below the seal in the case. I've tried changing the seal and spacer a few times with the same results. I figured I'd give it another shot, before I give it to someone else.
