Default FL vs FX fender struts?

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between FL and FX rear fender struts? I am aware some FX struts that have fewer holes than FLs but other than that difference, is the offset out on each side or the step up different?
I see many sets for sale that are listed to fit both FL and FX but the FL fender is wider than a FX so how can the struts be the same? Spacers?

Thanks.

7 inches has always been the early front fl rear both fx fl - fender - I don't care what they do now as they put car tires on bikes I have seen

fx has directional holes and mount holes - fl have luggage rack and bag mounts / and mounting so yea they are different

Length, bolt holes and width are different for the three O.E. Struts on a 4-speed...

Thanks for your response. I went out and bolted the three sets I have on the bike this evening. I should have done that to begin with. The FX struts have much more offset in and are shorter. Another difference I noticed was the FLs have counter sunk holes. I will post some pictures of them on the bike with no rear fender. The differences become very obvious at that point. Sellers that list one part and claim they both bikes are to beware of.

The three struts can be fairly easily identified visually...
Tho I only had the Hidden fastener FXWG strut when I got that photo.. A good "look" easily reveals what an O.E. Strut is For.
Very Few folks, certainly Few Vendors, know what is what... don't seem to care either... ie How many times have you seen chassis parts that supposedly fit FX's as well as FXR"s? Some even throw in Ironheads!!! Called Buzzwords [keywords]

Ya need to educate yerself...
