Can the cam side engine case of a 67 shovel be mated to a 78 alternator side case? So one side is alternator case, the other side is generator. I know this sounds crazy... just curious...
its been done -- if you decide to do it your gonna have to have the cylinder decks checked for flatness - areas like the engine mounts - the alignment of the pinion and sprocket shafts - theres 3 guys on here who have done a ton of stuff like this -- raceprez-- johnjzjz and twisted -- best to either ask them or if serious send them the cases to have any alignment or milling of surfaces done -- also your gonna have different numbers on the cases --
u- yes you can But 3 spots are in question for machining
one - the deck can become un even we deck them flat the same amount both sides --
2 - the spicket hole in the block top may not be round and the jugs wont fit in sometimes
3 - the case will need to be line honed do the main bearing left side is in align with the right side pinion
4 - you will need some finesse in flywheel assembly and truing as the 78 is an 80 inch end oiler and the flat side shovel 74 inch engine is a side oiler - one early and one late flywheel wont work you need the early wheels as the strokes are different ( they do make a special shafts for this mod ) - as well as the oil pump needs to retain the side oiling unless you mod the block for the oiling system, up date to the later oil pump - then to keep your jugs if yours now are say .010 you need .070 over 74 inch pistons as the 80 inch pistons don't work as some think -- the strokes are different in the 2 engines But T&O makes 80 inch early bolt in wheels just so you know
this is not for a novis to attempt to do blending early and late engines -- does and is done still today but you need to really know what your doing to accomplish it
Never did that one... don't see a need...while I thought the Output shaft was different on the pre Cone Motor.... i do not remember, as I simply put the stuff together as it is Supposed to be... my Partner would be the "go to" guty on this one... I have a hard enough time putting mismatched Cone motor Cases together...

agree but we have old timers with machines for many years and in the past they could not kick them any more - so we did that case swap on pans to get an electric start left side originally we used flat shovels then cone shovels now they make starters for tin primarys so a motor conversion is not needed
Duh...pretty much a no brainer that mismatched cases will have mismatched belly numbers...I was talking about the VIN number..the only number that matters when you try to register this Frankenstein
but its a bobber saving another with out using the real stuff for looks - the other is a cone shovel and the spicket has to be modded yet top and bottom are off
both engines are on going in the shop right now as the pan is further along
