Long ago I saw a shovel head with a chromed hinge on the rear fender and acorn nuts in place of the rivets. Ive always wanted to do this because no matter how carefully you paint, the paint always seems to pop off the hinge and it looks crappy. If I grind away the rivets, I am wondering if I would be able to separate the hinge from the fender. It does not look like there are any Spot welds on the hinge plate. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Experience Yup... Recommendation. Don't...Not to an O.E Fender.../ Just threw a bunch of $$ away...
On aftermarket ****???? Yea Go Ahead... nuthin to it really... Friend but a Barn door Hinge on in fact!!!
No, I wouldnt do it to an oe fender. Its aftermarket. Gave the originals to a buddy restoring an old shovel. They were beat.
Oh ... well then, it would probably be an improvement!!!!
Just a Few Rivets on the ones I have fooled with... Again... my friend did a Gate Hinge... Looks cool as ****!!! His is Black, and he touches it up with Nail Polish... Gotta admit, I taught him that one...it is amazing how many colors nail polish is offered in... and the cheaper stuff is just good ole [Fast Dry] Enamel!!!
Always wondered about a brass Piano Hinge??? Maybe someday I'll fool with that.... or... You will!!!!
mine does just mask it off painted it bright silver worked out and when needed do it over. And yes OE fender so not gonna cut it up. Ride safe. Wild Bill
^^^ Stock Shovelhead fender with a Tombstone taillight???I thought the hinge on O.E, was staggered by Width of hinge sections... wide then Shorter??? Unless the light is playing tricks in that photo... that is not a Stocker...

Blue Loctite my friend... not that puny purple stuff for this job...
Different look altogether tho, between the two..
apples and oranges - I am talking about the hinge removed and the fender two pieces not having the ability to hold together like when it was riveted - and with out gluing the hinge in place and the fender bottom to the top part = the bolts being 1/4 inch even with red loc tite will not stay in place - I have seen every hillbilly idea used to do just what he wants -= I was giving shop experience in how to keep it more then a year with out painting it again - and chipping the chrome you just had done - I don't see bolts in yours
