I tell ya, I got the best friends. My Buddy gave me a S&S Super E Friday. Its going on a 72 Shovel. Has an Edelbrock Evo manifold on it. I need a manifold. Am I stuck with the crappy O-Ring style intake or can I upgrade to a 1977+ Flat-band (what do you call those...rubber bands?) style manifold? Probably not without welding on new exhaust ports but I thought Id ask.
I will Not ... for any reason change whatever is on the heads... While I prefer O-rings... the rubberbands are just fine...All ya need to do is Use the Correct Band Clamps... or... Struggle on...
edit; By experience... in the Shop ... ie other folks Bikes... No way ya catch me with those damn nylon fillers ... ever... asking for problems...
Just do it Right...

they make a conversion kit for o ring - to the flat bands - it has a square plastic mimic o ring and then you use the flat rings - we only use the silicone red o rings today as they seal better and they don't crack like the rubber black OEM types
Hmm...the reason I asked was because I had a S&S flat band manifold and didn’t want to spend $ for the S&S o-ringy thingy. I’m gonna buy an S&S O-ring manifold and red o-rings

Tho I was Never fussy about the O-rings nor Bands... I suspect there are now better materials than there was when they first appeared...Ensure you have the Correct clamp..

I won't... I use what it was made for... I hate Manifold leaks... and it don't cost anything to do it Right... Besides which, I much prefer O-rings... but, have learned to live with rubberbands.

lol...Im gonna give that a try! I think there might be a space issue, as in too tight and wont actually fit between jugs...but well try..
wont be hooking up the carb for a few weeks. I need to go through it and check the needle and jets and clean it up. Just finished a cam install and Im almost ready to fire it up. Should I put the pipes back on?

This, the kit has 2 solid rings to take up the space the o-ring sat in and uses the bands & new clamps, works well I've installed a number of them. Just make sure you support the carb & air cleaner properly and they'll give you years of service.
