lets face it no one can nail it to the best oil for shovelhead I hear
all kinds of tales 20w50, straight fifty, straight 60 even heard straight 70
use type f in my inner primary but have used engine oils also, during the
winter months is 20w50 better?, have used several havoline racing oil, power factory
straight fifty, now ready to use revtec 70 hey what yall think? are racing oils good for shovelheads
or stay straight motorcycle oil
motorcycle oil for older machines is not new age stuff - while 25 /50 does a good service in machines running in cold weather - during the regular season we only buy 50 weight and 70 weight if someone thinks they know better then us we blend his oil part 50 / 70 to make 60
having said that air cooled motorcycle oil is not used in aircraft and most of the time the bikes we drive are not at 5 thousand feet so aircraft oil is off the table as a go to --- but any oil is better in a pinch then NO oil
You'll get many different opinions on this and it depends on the climate you live in but I run Torco 60 wt. in the summer and 50 wt. in the winter (if riding is possible.)
I have run various 20W50 dino oils in all my shovels since 1978.... probably six or seven of them. Lived in Oklahoma City, Houston and Bakersfield....so wide range of temps. Never had a problem.
