Please bear with me ... we are just trying to make sure you are turning the switch and not the key ... I've added pic of my bike with the switch off and switch on ... you can see the difference ... no KEY is involved

SWITCH POSITIN OFF

SWITCH POSITION ON

You are turning the switch. The purpose of the key is to lock that switch in the off position so not just anyone can hop on the bike and ride off with it. The lid on the switch flips open to reveal a key hole.

Ok now I feel dumb, I’ve never really played with harleys, I’m in my way to work (1hr drive one way) I got the ignition with me cause during my slow time I was going to toy with doing a continuity test on all the posts, but now having seen the visual pictures I see all I was doing was turning the key... that little **** on the side that came in an out with the key had me baffled I assumed it had to do with making contact for power not a lock.. thank you for the picture book explanation I’ll go back to my corner an twirl the spinny thing on my hat

at least now you are headed in the right direction ... you don't need the KEY to start the bike, just turn the switch ... the key is to lock the switch ... as Hellonewman mentioned ... Panz or someone else can guide you from here, better than I can ...

You are not the first and efinitely not the last. Welcome to the forum. I can top or equal the "duh" moment you had. When I first painted a 52 chop I built in the 70s, I had it painted red. So that the wires would be be less visible, I used all red wires. That did not work out well because I made an error in the system and it was all but imposisble to trace the error. Ended up color coding instead. Lesson learned.

Lol that would be a nightmare, but concept is understandable also! Thanks for all the help though, I do appreciate the support through this. I need to tip the carb off and clean it seems the float is sticking and I’m sure much more is in need of cleaning in there too

What’s people’s suggestions on the vertical oil lines?? I got it to start up but one of the vertical lines dried and rotted out and spewing oil out of it. The lines look like j&p braided lines I found them for 12.99 a set but is there any disadvantages or advantages to one or the other

Replace them all with new hose - transmission oil hose is better in my opinion than fuel hose. Couple that with fuel injection hose clamps for trouble free miles.
