I got some Nice shiney new Tappet Guide Blocks in yesterday. My tappets, (Solid) are very snug inside and one of them will not go in the way.
So is there a super secret special procedure for honing these out?
I understand it is more precise than just "hogging" out the hole. So I am asking for some old tricks or wisdom or prefered methods in this situation so i can decide what i need to do to move forward.
we do them routinely and i have a ball hone - and a cutter 6 flute spiral - the other tool is pin gages in the .731 range by .001 up and down so we can check like a no go gage
some shops use a sunnen end hone that uses a dial gage to fit exact < i would find a machine shop that owns one and pay them to set them at .001 to .0015 fit - cheaper then seizing up one not knowing what the interference actually is
Using a set of vernier calipers on all 4 of the solid lifters I have 0.728 to 0.730 for measurements.
Sorry... I have never used Calipers on such measurements.. this situation, like Most Engine Fitment measurements, is why God made mic's..
Stock is .7306 to .7308 I believe..

Sorry.... I have always just used my verniers for quick measurements because that is what i thought we were going here for a litttle help maybe not to make someone feel as if they are 100% wrong in what they are doing. So since you have a god made set of mics I feel humbled but my brown and sharpe set put me right at about the same measurements .728-.730 I will get down into the nitty gritty later and maybe even take it out to the tenths where is the best place to take said measurement bottom or top of the tappet? ...............Sorry
Aftermarket chrome blocks it's not uncommon to have a flash chrome build up at the openings making things tight. Chrome tends to get fat on edges and in openings of holes. Follow John's advice if it's snug, get it honed or reamed or you will have a galling issue when hot.
in a production shop we would go to a mike before a caliper - while i use a caliper for walk around measuring its no my go to for any fitting or pieces together that use close tolerances
no one is picking on you but a mistake in a .001 fit will be a disaster to fix after the fact - so -- relaying experience on the lap top with moter cycle guys
