. But for now, I believe the engine to be fresh enough to live a while before I have to get into it. Everything else that surrounds the engine...needs help. Anyway, before I get too far down that road, like I said I'll probably be going about this in an ***-backwards manner. So cosmetics/instant gratification first. A couple of questions:
-Preferable brand for new tanks? Current tanks have imperfections and have sat less than full for years, so I want to start fresh. They're not original units so I do not care about saving them. Would like to get bayonet style as was original.
-(approximate) Cost involved in painting the tanks and fenders? Would like to revert back to original "Candy Red" metallic, no pinstripes or anything else fancy. Understand that "it depends" a lot. But are we talking like 500? 1000? 2000? Have no idea.
Thanks guys.
I am rewiring everything, changed all the basics, points, plugs, and so on. Rebuilt the carb, basically got it trust-worthy.
As you have already decided, dont bother with FI especially if you want to try to go back to OEM. When I bought my bike it had an S&S carb on it and I really love it. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to clean it up, tune it, rebuild it. And the factory settings on it will get the bike running. Once you spend just a little time getting to know the carb, you will probably have lost all interest in putting FI on it.
After some time, you might find that the bike is just fine as it is now without dumping a lot of money into it. Enjoy your wonderful piece of history!

You can turn this into a very reliable bike if you address the problems properly.
I have several Shovelheads, one FLH with an enclosed primary belt vented with thick washers between inner primary and cover when I bought it.
Another FLH (my preferred bike for holiday trips) has a CV carb tuned near sea level but I have ridden it from below sea level ( I live in the Netherlands) to over 9000 feet without any adjustments and no problems at all.
