If you are in New York and are going to be riding primarily between sea level and 4,000 feet above sea level, the only thing to worry about jetting is that they match your timing, intake, cam, and exhaust. I jetted my bike at Ft Bragg, NC which isn't very high above sea level and had no problems riding in the Smokey or Blue Ridge mountains, nor did I change them when I moved back home to the mountains of PA upon retirement. That altitude issue probably comes into effect at over 6,000 feet and probably closer to 8,000 feet. Maybe others can expand on this.

Guys, thank you for the welcome and your input. I am going to further explore the realities of fuel injection but it seems that the carb is the general consensus-I'm sure that's not for no reason. So S&S might be in my (more immediate) future. I really appreciate the input. Longer term, plan is to revert completely to a stock 80" shovel *MAYBE* with fuel injection . But for now, I believe the engine to be fresh enough to live a while before I have to get into it. Everything else that surrounds the engine...needs help.

Anyway, before I get too far down that road, like I said I'll probably be going about this in an ***-backwards manner. So cosmetics/instant gratification first. A couple of questions:

-Preferable brand for new tanks? Current tanks have imperfections and have sat less than full for years, so I want to start fresh. They're not original units so I do not care about saving them. Would like to get bayonet style as was original.

-(approximate) Cost involved in painting the tanks and fenders? Would like to revert back to original "Candy Red" metallic, no pinstripes or anything else fancy. Understand that "it depends" a lot. But are we talking like 500? 1000? 2000? Have no idea.

Thanks guys.

I have a NOS set of black staggered duals. Front and rear headpipes, with crossover, and original front and rear mufflers. Black.

Thank you PJB, this one came with chrome ones when new. I would like to get a set of the chrome ones, even if used. I appreciate it though!

When I got to working on my 79 Superglide, I too wanted to bring it back to OEM. After a little looking and some thinking, I realized it was too far from OEM to bother unless I wanted to dump a bunch of money into the bike. I decided to let most of it stay as it was. It’s a bad-*** bike and I like it the way it is.

I am rewiring everything, changed all the basics, points, plugs, and so on. Rebuilt the carb, basically got it trust-worthy.

As you have already decided, don’t bother with FI especially if you want to try to go back to OEM. When I bought my bike it had an S&S carb on it and I really love it. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to clean it up, tune it, rebuild it. And the factory settings on it will get the bike running. Once you spend just a little time getting to know the carb, you will probably have lost all interest in putting FI on it.

After some time, you might find that the bike is just fine as it is now without dumping a lot of money into it. Enjoy your wonderful piece of history!

Great story and following this thread. I hope you throw in lots of pictures!
You can turn this into a very reliable bike if you address the problems properly.
I have several Shovelheads, one FLH with an enclosed primary belt vented with thick washers between inner primary and cover when I bought it.
Another FLH (my preferred bike for holiday trips) has a CV carb tuned near sea level but I have ridden it from below sea level ( I live in the Netherlands) to over 9000 feet without any adjustments and no problems at all.
