Default Compensator Upgrade....

Hey everyone, I picked up my motor from John yesterday and as I was putting it back in my 98 Fatboy, I decided that now would be a good time to replace/upgrade the compensator. It still has the original setup but with a 24 tooth sprocket that I will replace with another 24 but I would like to know what you guys did to your stroker Shovel compensators to handle the increase in power... The original build of this motor was 109/114 and will still be very close to that if not more hp cause of the cam swap that john suggested.. I'm not considering going to a Belt drive.. Been there done that... I want to keep with the original primary, so any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.. And if your wondering why I posted here it's because I know of all the knowledge over here.. Thanks Bob...

Default Call Baker

You’re going aftermarket so try all the big guys first. Baker is the place I’d first check. Phone# 5173393835
My 96” Twinkie is mostly stock with a Baker Compensator to replace the junk/failed HD unit.
Tell em your build an maybe they can help.

Sorry I can't help on that one, I've always run the stock comps on shovels of any size when I had chain in there. I would add an extra spring cup or 2 to the bigger inch motors.

so I hesitated to add anything here but I would run a solid sprocket - other dudes have run a solid with big inch motors and it was fine - some guys will say it will scissor the wheels - shake like hell - etc etc - I tried a solid on my shovel - it was fine - I ran solids on all my ironheads with big inch motors and never had issues - and I ran belts on all my big inch shovels - I know the belts give and take - but so does a chain if setup right - check around - there are a lot of guys that run the solids on big inch Evos - ferg

Under load - I do not think the comp does anything - since I'm always wicking the throttle - not sure if it is needed - no what I mean......

Shovel flywheels aren't sensitive nancy's like the twinkies, take's some effort the tweak them. I spun the output shaft in a set on my 88" and the wheels themselves didn't tweak. For a daily rider a solid will work, those I've ridden just have more abrupt feel on take off, bit more clutch feathering maybe.

BDL makes a teflon clutch style compensator - if you dig around you will find it is a total POS - I also came across a few other aftemarket comps that went out of business long ago - if I ever sell the 83 tour glide I'll finish building this little Jammer hardtail - I am goinf to run an open chain primary - soild 25T up front - I'll fab up a spring tensioner with a sprocket roller for tension - sprocket rollers used ot be available for sporties and I assume shovels too - but I only owned sporties through the 70's and 80s back in the day

Do you know where I can get an extra spring plate?

if we are talking about the washer in the cover - that is held by crimps - it is just a washer - I would think is it a PIA to add washers there given the HD method of simply bending the cover or should I say crimping the edge to retain the washer - I saw one of these that was "re-crimped" and it was a disaster - looked like the guy slammed the cover edge with a chisel - do you have a valve spring gauge to measure the spring tension at stock vs the new height? That spring looks like if has minimal height change and is fairly compressed - meaning it may be close to linear on the height vs. PSI scale

There are spring cones in there not washers. And only an idiot uses a chisel to roll a crimp again
