You are correct--should be 60498-80 for the '80 Sturgis outer outer. I transposed the #'s.. I figure that I may have to do the same if I cannot find the correct primary cover or seal up that ventilated primary I already have.
Thanks!

Catalog Inner primaries are:60502-80A for FXB and FXSB, and 60502-84 for early FXSB..meaning '80 Sturgis with mods will work on FXSB..

for Outer Primary cover is either an original 80 Sturgis without screen holes--- 60488-80, or a 60531-83B for 83-84 FXSB/WG

Compensator sprocket assembly is 40275-83 -----83-84 FXSB/WG Is the new, shorter comp assembly
Clutch shell is 37707-82 ......fits early FXSB and WG, is pre wet clutch

Primary chain is normal 82 link

Starter set up is same as 80 Sturgis
Chain adjuster assb is same as all primary chain adj assemblies.

Let me know is this is correct or missing something.
Thanks for all the input so far.
what do you mean by screen holes

The primary cover that came with the bike is aftermarket; has three large cutouts for ventilating screens, plus the Derby Cover, which is also a screen. a .total loss, except for belt.

I managed to find an '84 FXSB outer primary cover from Pinwall Cycle in Ohio. It is a 60506-82, not a 60531 suffix part like the parts catalog stated. No 506 was listed. Might be an FLH part. I do not have that parts catalog yet.

My inner will be drilled for the chain adjuster. I got one using my PayPal points that I did not know I had.
I found a takeoff, proper Harley mfg compensator assembly--harder to find complete, that is not chinese.

Comments welcome.
I hope my old knees like the Kickstart. I used to joke that my right leg was permanently shorter, due to all the kicks on hard starting Pans and Knuckles. Actually the best kick starter I had was a '49 61" El, that always started on 2 kicks. Smooth runner it was for sure, that '61.
Project progressing.

I hate to use Chinese parts.

Inner primaries alone are going from $350 to $450 or so on ebay and conditions vary widely, some I've seen they haven't bothered cleaning the road gunk off of for those prices.

I had the inner primary and clutch hub/clutch from the bike and a new primary chain in stock.

I purchased an outer primary cover, 60506-82, listed for an 84 FXSB from Pinwall Cycle, off Ebay for $149.00, Dull and scratched--it will be painted black anyway.

I got a new primary chain adjuster setup for shovelhead, about $70 delivered,

Used Harley made, 83 spec complete compensator 24 tooth, for $50 off Ebay. Looks good.
Clutch shell will be about $349 for an 83-84 dry clutch FXSB/WG It is chinese from V twin off Ebay I also need the 80 cubic inch derby cover to be correct.

So cost will be about $700 complete for the conversion to primary chain drive.
Bike was inexpensive due to being disassembled. I just checked the speedo odometer---it actually says 4635 miles, so I will not be upside down on it financially. I am pulling the heads and cylinders, off to see if it has the new valve guides and to check condition of cylinders/pistons and go from there.

Bike did not come with a primary belt--just the carnage of previously broken belts, and a bad belt drive compensator, with bad rubber bisquits.,
Previous owner obviously tried to use it, as the ventilated outer primary cover shows.

my inner primary is correct, the previous owner had put forward controls on her and I'm looking to finish putting the mid controls on her. I'm in desperate need of a shifter shaft that goes thru the primary and attaches to the outer primary shifter lever(which I have) and to the shifter mechanism up by the tranny. I need the shaft, as well as the lever to attach it to the tranny. PS., the seat and sissy bar are much appreciated and the pouch has been completely reconditioned, thank-you.
