Last question for you guys. I got the old shovel purring with the new super E. only issue i have now is the ATF i put in the primary (based on guidance from Rivera) seems to be trying to leak out of all sides of the outer primary cover. This is the first time I've used ATF. Normally use 60 wt oil. Is the ATF just too thin?
Yes. It does work great on a clutch but there are other items in there you need to consider. Use a straight weight non detergent gear oil. Simplest and easy to obtain is formula plus from Harley. And only fill to lower edge of spring plate with bike held level. Don't go by amount. Go by level.
P.S. Any oil is going to leak if it's not put together properly. Sounds like you need new gaskets and just a film of black Permatex RTV. Just a film. And when you button it up, let it dry 24 hours. That little small pencil lead size bead will just roll off. No mess. If it's bigger then a pencil lead, you are using too much.
Thanks. permatex on both sides of gasket? also, are you saying to let the permatex dry overnight before buttoning down the outer cover?
Clean all aluminum with laquir thinner. Be sure all burrs are gone. Threads are clean. Bolts are clean.
Lay gasket on fresh cardboard. Butter film and flip. Do the other side. Any real dings in aluminum, RTV them if bad. Put gasket on dowls or align on cover and snug in proper order center out usually.
Use a T-handle driver between middle and third finger to snug to just pull cover down. (I have seen some bowed a 1/32")
Let dry 24 hours. Finish snug. Roll off dry excess. Oil and test drive. On return, when hot, check snug.
How I do it. Dry as a Honda and that's dry...

Beware slapping RTV on a paper gasket, it can will allow the gasket to crush and squirt out if you over tighten the bolts a bit.
Costs more but the metal, silicon wafer gaskets are the way to go. If you have to use anything on it a light spray of Hi-tack or Hylomar and let them get tacky before assembling. Only place I'll use RVT today is between the inner cover and the engine case with the big real skinny o-ring to seal there. Even then the Ultra Gray is product of choice. Handles the oil & vibration better than the other RTV's.
